OpenCamp Blackhat SEO with Social Media

The first content session I’m attending at OpenCamp is by Gio, aka Giovanni Gallucci, a longtime search and social media marketer based in Dallas. The topic is “Blackhat SEO” and the room is packed! The session was cut a bit short due to technical difficulties with getting the conference started and Gio took it in stride and was both entertaining and informative – the right mix for a morning tech crowd. Gio says “Black hat is simply another way to automate a time-consuming process. In other areas of marketing and life in general we encourage automation in order to maximize efficiency and get a leg up on our competitors”. According to the conference session description, the nature of this session doesn’t allow liveblogging or tweeting, which i think is a load of crap, so I’ll liveblog it anyway

Absolute URLs for Image SEO Recommended?

A WebmasterWorld thread has discussion on the basic topic of using absolute URLs versus relative URLs. I believe we covered the topic several times here, but not when it comes to image SEO. Again, an absolute URL is using the full URL path, such as http://www.domain.com/filename. The relative URL is just using /filename in the source code. Now when people rip off your content, sometimes they will forget to change the URLs and thus SEOs typically recommend using the absolute URL. Why? Because those rip off sites will then link to your content

Google Responds To Detailed Questions On Pagination SEO Issues

Duplicate content is not a fun topic for many SEOs and Webmasters. When it comes to dealing with large dynamic sites and dealing with how they paginate content, it makes things a bit more complicated. Pagniation of articles and even worse, pagination of the navigational elements (categories, sub category pages) to those articles can be a real hair puller for many webmasters. So what do you do? I spotted one of the most detailed threads on this topic with some of the brightest SEOs and even a Googler discussing the various options.

Some Clues On Making Unique Content From Google

I spotted an interesting thread at Google Webmaster Help where a manufacturer is upset that his vendors outrank him for his own products. The manufacturer provides an XML feed for their vendors and resellers to use and sell, but it is the same content the manufacturer uses on his own site. He asked what he can do to make sure Google knows that his site is the source of this content and thus rank higher than his resellers? In that, Google's JohnMu replied offering a glimpse of insight into how to differentiate his content and make it unique enough for Google to find it rank worthy. JohnMu spoke a bit about the Google algorithms, saying: Our algorithms don't count characters, but they try to find unique content in a sense. I wouldn't worry too much about the length, I'd just make sure that you have pages about your software on your site that do not contain just the content that you're syndicating via the XML file

Difference Between Video Sitemaps & Video Sitemaps Labs Report in Google Webmaster Tools

A couple weeks ago, Google released a new labs report named video sitemaps errors . So now there are two reports in Google Webmaster Tools reporting on your video sitemaps . What is the difference between the one in the Site configuration section and the one currently in the Labs section? Bing News Sends Nice Traffic & Can Be Delayed

When it comes to news search engines, it seems like all we talk about is Google News and rarely Yahoo or Bing News. I spotted a WebmasterWorld thread with a rare post by someone included in the Bing News index. The publisher said, "My site has just been indexed in Bing News. And I like it." He said he didn't request to get listed in Bing News , which, by the way, doesn't work. He was just included randomly and he loves what he sees. He noticed an "uptick in retweets" and looked into it. It turned out to be Bing sending traffic to his site via Bing News.
