Video Recap of Weekly Search Buzz :: August 27, 2010

In this week's recap, I kind of give it to Yahoo. They say I am "irresponsible" for saying they are not a search company when their own CEO said that?! Google's brand search change is out of hand and then they do steaming search results, that's whack! Google gave real time search a home page and additional features, including inclusion in Google Alerts. Google Maps updated their map review guidelines. Google News made a design change, keeps reverting back to old design. A study shows how important those meta descriptions are in your click through rates. Google & SEOs have one of the best duplicate content and pagination discussions ever. Google gives some deep insights into what makes content unique.

Google News Changes Again, Adds Collapsible Right Side

I love it, Google keeps tweaking their re-design to make it more similar to the look prior to the redesign. Why? Their users keep complaining and asking for the old design and Google made one tweak a month or so ago and now made another tweak. Now, if you visit Google News you will see a right arrow at the top middle section. Clicking that arrow will push those articles to fill the screen and drop out the right hand "recent," "local," and "spotlight" sections. This hopefully will resolve most of the complaints?

Google News Keeps Shifting Closer To Old Design

Bing News Sends Nice Traffic & Can Be Delayed

When it comes to news search engines, it seems like all we talk about is Google News and rarely Yahoo or Bing News. I spotted a WebmasterWorld thread with a rare post by someone included in the Bing News index. The publisher said, "My site has just been indexed in Bing News. And I like it." He said he didn't request to get listed in Bing News , which, by the way, doesn't work. He was just included randomly and he loves what he sees. He noticed an "uptick in retweets" and looked into it. It turned out to be Bing sending traffic to his site via Bing News.

Google News Sitemaps: One Language Per Sitemap File

This week we covered the Google one language per page rule and today I spotted a thread specific to how this works with Google News. A Google News Help thread has Googler Inbal saying you should submit a News Sitemap file for each language. Inbal from Google said: If all your languages editions are published on one site, the Google News preference is for one news sitesmaps for multiple languages. It is also important to set the language in the News Sitemap file using the n:language tag. For more on News Sitemap files see here . Forum discussion at Google News Help .

19 days ago, Google launched a redesign for Google News . Many many many users absolutely hated the design . Last week, Google finally responded with a tweak to the design, giving people a way to show a second column. But many still miss the basic old layout that they have grown to love. Google Changes Google News Design Based On Complaints

I am shocked, honestly shocked. Google recently redesigned Google News , and based on our poll, 85% hated the new design. I have been tracking complaints in the forums for weeks now and the complaints have no slowed. I really thought Google would not care, like with the complaints with the Google fade in and web search redesign but they did - they caved and they made changes to appease their users. I assume enough users left Google for Google to announce Google News changes reflect your feedback : At Google, we’re all about launching and iterating, so we've been making improvements to the design in response to your feedback. For example, we're now showing the entire cluster of articles for each story, rather than expanding the cluster when you hover your mouse over it. We've given you the ability to hide the weather forecast from your local news section.
