Google Instant: Predictions Were Right

Who doesn't love saying, "told you so"? My predictions and examples of search as you type were dead on. Google announced the launch of Google Instant . Here is a quick video I made: Tons and tons of coverage on the announcement. Key things for webmasters, SEOs and advertisers? (1) SEO is not dead despite what some people say . Google is still showing search results, SEOs will work with that. (2) Paying for AdWords has changed a bit, make sure to monitor your search volume and ad spend this week.

Google Bypassing "Search" Button: More "Streaming" Search Results

Several people are reporting seeing Google automatically take them to the search results page from the Google home page, as they type a search query. Imagine you are on Google.com and you begin typing a search query. Then all of a sudden, as you type, Google flashes the page into a Google search results. Even before you press the enter key or hit the "Google Search" button, you are taken to the search results. Sometimes, even before you complete your full search query. There are people reporting this at Google Blogoscoped Forums and WebmasterWorld

Google Scribe: SEO Keyword Suggestion Tool?

Google Scribe is a new Google Labs project that offers keyword suggestions in an open text box, as you type. It is not the Google search box, it is a standalone text entry box for auto word completion suggestions. You can click on the suggestion or type the number referenced to auto-complete it. Google Operating System blog goes much deeper into all the features. It seems to only work in the English language

Google Changes Coming Tomorrow: AJAX Results, 30 Results Per Page, Streaming Results & More?

We know Google is having a big search event tomorrow and we suspect that is why Google is showing the Google Balls logo today. Google told me "today's doodle is not related to a birthday but is fast, fun and interactive , just the way we think search should be." So what will Google be announcing tomorrow? Well, based on that comment and what I have been seeing some people report, let me venture some guesses. (1) AJAX powered search results. Yes, I believe Google will go forward with the AJAX powered search results tomorrow

Google Showing 20+ Results Despite Search Setting

Ever since the weekend, when I do a search at Google, Google is returning 20 or more (I am seeing 30 results) search results on the page. I checked my Google search setting preference and it was set to show 10 per page. I even resaved the result, but it still shows me more than 20 results on a page. I am not alone. Andy Beard also noticed this (he is seeing 20 results) and broke down detailed screen shots. I have posted one at Flickr if you want to see it.

Google Cache Broken For Home Pages

There is a weird Google bug with the cache feature. It seems to only impact home pages. For example, a search for this site in Google returns a Google search result of the home page (we aren't penalized yet): But when you click on the cache link , it takes you to a dead page: This does not appear to impact inside pages, but rather only the root page (aka home page). Why? I have been receiving emails reporting this, as well as spotted several threads in the forums about this

Google Adds Blog Filter To Help Find Blogs On Subjects

Google announced they added a new filter that helps you find "specialized blogs" on any topic you can imagine. Here is how it works. Go to Google, search for a topic, then click on the "blogs" filter on the left side (note: it might be hidden under a "more" link). Then when the page filters to blogs, click again on the left side, this time where it says "homepages." That filter will show the most important and relevant blogs on the search query you entered. Here is a screen shot: How is this useful? Well, for a searcher it is obvious, but what about an SEO

Google Social Search Mixing Up Twitter Usernames & Twitter IDs?

Google Social Search launched about 11 months ago and it has been popping into the normal search results for those who are socially active online. Recently, I spotted a bug with how Google Social Search works. A Google Web Search Help thread reports that Google is mixing up the Twitter usernames with the Twitter user IDs. What is the difference between a username and user ID on Twitter? For example, my username on Twitter is rustybrick but my ID on Twitter is 922011. How did I find my ID? As per the Twitter help documents, you can find your ID by going to your Twitter profile and clicking on the rss feed address of any Twitter page. The number just before the ".rss" suffix is your Twitter ID
