Moving from Fragmented to Segmented Online Marketing

Companies today have a virtual smörgåsbord of options when it comes to marketing their products and services online. Lack of expertise, numerous tactical options, pressure for sales in a down economy and the tendency to chase shiny objects cause many online marketing efforts to be fragmented. I really doubt that a significant waste of effort and disconnect with customers is part of any company’s online marketing strategy. But it’s happening. A lot

GoogleBot Stop Crawling Your Site On June 15th?

There are several webmasters complaining in Google Webmaster Help and WebmasterWorld that Google has stopped crawling their site's as of yesterday morning. Some say the crawling has not stopped completely, but rather dipped to a tiny fraction of the crawl rate they normally see. Even senior member, Walkman, agreed and said: I got 50 googlebot visits, down from over 1000 normally There was some speculation that this was only impacting European web sites, but it seems to be larger. Another senior member said: Same here, daily average for the last 7 days was 20,000 gbot hits. Yesterday was 150 total gbot hits. Site is a US based site so I don't think this is a European only event.

Video Recap of Weekly Search Buzz :: May 21, 2010

This week I covered the news on Google TV. Google should be launching secure and encrypted search this week. Yahoo Site Explorer is reporting a significant link drop, why? Bing is handing 301 redirects well. Google removed the only way to get to the old design. Google search bug hid the search query

43% Of SEOs Say Traffic Down Since Google Redesign

Earlier this month, Google launched their new design to all and even though many hate it Google is sticking with it and pleading for searchers to stick with it also. But from an SEO's or Webmaster's perspective, is the new design bad? Some are reporting that the new design is sending fewer referrals and less traffic to their web site. Now, that can be a huge deal for a site that gets a lot of traffic from organic Google search results. Back then, the report came from WebmasterWorld , yes a thread but also the site said they are suffering with the new design. So I decided to see if it is widespread or specific to WebmasterWorld. I ran a poll asking you if your Google referrals have changed since the redesign.

Text Link Ads in 2010

Originally Link Diagnosis was a fairly well received free link analysis tool. But since its launch its role in the SEO game may have quietly changed. While surfing around the SEO space I checked out the iAcquire white paper, which explained that they own LinkDiagnosis. iAcquire, which claims to be a corporate link building tool, apparently states that they use your research to service their clients. See the following image from their report! John Andrews has warned against using tools for link builders by link builders , and highlights some of the related dangers Now a well know link building service provider is offering a tool for managing link building. Part of the pitch is that only a professional link builder really knows how to build a good link building tool. I don’t disagree… but I do think the last person I want to share my link building activity data with is a professional link builder

Google Doodles For May Day, Spain’s Mother’s Day & World Expo China

There was a set of Google Doodles (logos) being placed on Google's international properties this weekend and I figured I'd share them with you. One was on Google Spain, one was on several Google properties for May Day and the other was on Google China/Hong Kong. Here they are with their related forum threads, thanks to Websonic : May Day: Forum discussion at Google Blogoscoped . Mother's Day in Spain: Forum discussion at Google Blogoscoped . World Expo China: Forum discussion at Google Blogoscoped . Google Mexico had a Children's Day logo: Google also had special distracted driving logo because they are working on an initiative to get people to focus on driving and not their technology:

Picture: Google "Related Commercial Searches"

A few days ago, we reported on rumors of Google Showing Commercially Related Keywords In AdWords Positions . Well, it turns out to be true. A long time friend from the industry, Darrin Ward sent me a screen shot of this image the other day. Here it is: As you can see, in the position of where Google's search ads go, the AdWords ads, are "related commercial searches." I guess the query searched for here is not commercial oriented enough for Google to validate showing search ads for, so they are pushing people to be more commercially oriented when searching. What do you think of this? Forum discussion at WebmasterWorld .

SES Chicago: 5 Ways to Multiply Conference ROI

Next week is the final search marketing conference of the year for me and most others in the SEM industry:  Search Engine Strategies Chicago is a MidWest focused event that will offer keynotes from the likes of Jeff Jarvis, Author of What WouldGoogle Do? and a multitude of Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced breakout sessions covering SEO, PPC, Social Media and many other related web marketing topics. I know there are plenty of agencies and companies that are experiencing slimmed marketing and travel budgets, wondering if marketing conferences are worth the investment. Sponsoring and exhibiting are a big part of many companies marketing strategy and for those companies that do it right, with pre, during and post show promotion, it’s very productive.
